CLC’s team, led by Antonios Nikolaos Billis, MEng Mechanical Engineering, University of Thessaly, MSc Marine Engineering, University of Strathclyde, mentored and supervised our students, Panagiotis Vagias, Jeffrey Shao, Konstantinos Sougioultzoglou, and Odysseas Kontos, to carry out a research project on the implementation of the REFOS platform for alternative and sustainable energy.
This paper examined renewable energy offshore platforms as a response to the rapid growth in the lack of fossil fuels and a constant rise in temperature worldwide caused by the greenhouse effect. These platforms provide sustainable sources while converting wind and wave energy to electrical energy. Floating wind turbines with special arrangements for wave energy exploitation, such as the REFOS platform, have already made a breakthrough, and their installation will soon be established in many deep-water locations in Europe.
