CLC’s team, led by Ms. Louiza Chatzigeorgiou, BSc Chemistry, University of Patras, mentored and supervised our students Athina Christoforou, Athina Drandaki, Maida Kourounlian and Malvina-Christina Nikolaidi, to carry out a research project on the importance of Iron Protein in the human body.
This paper examined the essential role of iron and iron-containing proteins in key biological processes, particularly within the respiratory system. It highlighted iron’s historical and medical significance, its necessity for haemoglobin synthesis, and its involvement in oxygen transport, redox reactions, and other vital functions. The study also explored how dysfunctions in iron metabolism contribute to diseases such as anaemia, cardiovascular, and respiratory disorders, emphasizing the importance of ongoing research for developing effective therapies and diagnostics.
