“Populism and Anti-Immigration Sentiment in Europe”

CLC’s team, led by Mr. Alexandros Marios Konstantes, MA European Political and Governance Studies: European Public Policy Analysis, College of Europe, Brugge and Mr. Charalampos Stampolis, MA Folklore and Education, MA Digital Technologies in Education, NKUA, mentored and supervised our students Elena Norton, Eleni Efstathiou, Kyriaki Panagiotou and Stavros Damalitis, to carry out a research project on the rise of populism in Europe and how this political phenomenon has influenced anti-immigration sentiment.

This paper examines the historical development of populism in Europe, providing insight into its origins and evolution. Taking that into consideration, the article analyses multiple factors that drive anti-immigration sentiment, including economic, cultural, identity and security. Moreover, emphasis is given on the broader implications of rising anti-immigration sentiment for social cohesion, democratic values, and the future of immigration policy in Europe.
